Present as speaker during Automotive Logistics Summit 2016, David Goldsborough, CEO Tibbett Logistics Romania has spoken about the intermodal transport and its applicability in the automotive industry, presenting a case study.
„Currently, the benefits of the intermodal transport in automotive in Romania are only reducing to the inbound segment of the logistics chain, therefore permitting a better planning and scheduling of the raw materials and components flux towards the production units in Romania. Compared to the containers road transport, the intermodal transport allows the relocation of a large number of containers in a terminal near the factory, enabling the client to plan exactly what kind of components are needed firstly in the warehouse or on the production line, at the exact time (24/7). This is not possible all the time when the containers are transported with trucks.
Considering the outflow of components (finished products) from factories in Romania, moving towards production units in Western Europe, intermodal services connecting Romania to Western Europe are still underdeveloped and have not reached the daily volumes large enough to have regular departures of trains.
The greatest impediment to the development of intermodal transport lies not necessarily in the lack of infrastructure or terminals, but rather in the regularity and safety of a stream of trains between Romania and enough destinations in Western Europe for that service to be viable for automotive industry", said David Goldsborough.
