The players in the modern retails currently have almost 75 hectares of logistics warehouses, with 50 pct. more than one year ago. The most recent deals on this segment are the investment announced Lidl in Lugoj, Timiş county and the lease agreements signed by Carrefour and Profi in the last year.

„The decision of expanding the logistics platforms comes on the background of the networks’ expansion. Retailers have in fact only two options: to supply their networks from their own platforms or to let suppliers to provide for them.  But this latter option would mean not only chaos for the networks ,but also a larger resources mobilization and bigger costs”, says Cătălin Olteanu, general manager FM Logistic, one of the largest logistics companies which is active in the consumer goods sector .

He explains the fact that the retailers have initially bet on large stores, in the main cities in Romania, as in the latest years to switch to supermarket units or to proximity stores in small and medium cities. Overall, the total modern retail area has increased though a lot, therefore the necessary logistics area has consequently evolved.

According to data offered by the market research company Euromonitor, the average modern retail area for 1,000 inhabitants has doubled in the period 2008-2015, up to 106 sq. m. This means that all units in modern retail have a total of 2.1 million sq. m, respectively 212 hectares. The total logistics area is 75.5-76.6 hectares.

The calculations included both the warehouses owned by the retailers and the rented facilities. (source: zf.ro)
