The answer is simple: we use protection systems adapted to the needs of the warehouse. They are divided into 3 categories:
1. Pedestrian protections
Saving lives comes first. Manufacturing plants and distribution centers often have heavy material handling equipment that moves close to employees at work. Safety barriers separate employees from equipment and keep people safe. The most important barrier is the one that separates the workforce from a 4.5t forklift speeding across the warehouse floor. There are various models, depending on the systems used to handle the goods.
2. Protections for equipment
As the number of modern distribution centers and production factories has increased, so have the risks associated with these work environments. With heavier machinery – which carries bulky loads and has a higher speed – there is an increased likelihood of various errors or accidents.
Walls, columns and implemented equipment have no chance in a "confrontation" with a forklift. This can cause an increase in maintenance and repair expenses (eg: pouring concrete, installing new protections, etc.). Investing in total facility protection will keep your operations up and running and save a lot on maintenance costs over time.
3. Racks protections
Racks are extremely important in a warehouse because they supports and organizes merchandise. If they collapse, so do operations, which means extra costs.
Racks are at constant risk of damage because forklifts driven by operators frequently interact with them. One wrong turn of the wheel can be enough to knock them over.
In a functional warehouse, all 3 types of protection are recommended, because each one has its own well-defined role and together they provide protection for the workforce, the machines and the goods. However, depending on the type of warehouse, machines and the field of activity the solutions are different for each case. Before taking any actions, it’s best to consult with specialists in this field to help you make the best decision according to the needs and particularities of the warehouse.
