The total amount spent so far reaches EUR 60 million, EUR 5 million of which was paid for expropriations. The work on the overpass has been completed by 40%, and the total cost would have amounted to almost EUR 140 million.

The work on the overpass which should have connected the Splaiul Independentei Avenue in Bucharest with the A1 highway started in 2010. In the last four years, the building permits have been declared illegal several times but the work continued. Each time the Bucharest City Hall issued new permits. However, this time the Bucharest Court has asked for the bridge’s demolition.

The sentence was given after the owner of a house located next to the site proved that the overpass is based on illegal documents. The project should pass by the water basins in Rosu which supply with water a third of Bucharest, said Nicusor Dan, a representative of the civil society. However, according to a European Directive, you are not allowed to build something near these water basins, he added. (source: Romania-insoder.com)
