In the first quarter of 2016, foreign direct investment in Romania amounted to 1.375 billion Euros, according to News.ro calculations, based on revised data published by the NBR.

"Direct investment of non-residents in Romania totalled EUR 1,075 million, of which equity capital (including the estimated reinvested earnings) amounted to EUR 1,258 million and intra-group loans recorded a negative net worth of EUR 183 million", the central bank said.

Foreign direct investment is considered to be the most beneficial investment made by foreign companies in an economy because they are long-term and usually have positive effects on the economy and wages.

In 2016, foreign companies made direct investments in Romania worth 4.08 billion Euros, an increase of 18% compared to the previous year and a record level of the last eight years.

Foreign direct investments have fully covered the current account deficit of Romania, estimated at 4.1 billion Euros, according to preliminary data of the NBR. (source: news.ro)
